Hello! I’m Michelle Chubenko, AG, AGL, a genealogist who specializes in ancestry from the Austrian crownland of Galicia.
In April 2025, I was awarded a Continuing Genealogical Research Project Grant from the American Society of Genealogists for my project—A Genealogist’s Guide to Austrian Land Cadastres for the Crownland of Galicia.
Project Title:
A Genealogist’s Guide to Austrian Land Cadastres for the Crownland of Galicia
Purpose and Scope
Over the past ten years, I have utilized land cadastre material for client work and genealogical presentations as a means to provide historical context for the geographic location of client’s families and the importance of these record collections to fill the void of non-extant metrical records. Ofttimes researchers will end their research efforts with obtaining the church/civil registrations and don’t pursue further records because they believe there is nothing more for them. I hope to change that view with creating this resource
Currently, there are limited English-language resources for Austrian land cadastres written for genealogical application of the record collections. Most publications focus on the historical macro use of the land cadastres, not the application of the micro interpretation of a target family within their village or town.
This project aims to develop a guide —A Genealogist’s Guide to Austrian Land Cadastres for the Crownland of Galicia—to assist genealogists in understanding, locating, and utilizing Austrian cadastral records for family history research in the former crownland of Galicia [Königreich Galizien und Lodomerien].
